Training programs for workers and residents who may be exposed to hazardous substances.

The Midwest Consortium (MWC) for Hazardous Waste Worker Training has been funded since 1987 by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) to develop, present and evaluate model worker training programs to workers and residents who may be exposed to hazardous substances, and to help employers comply with 29 CFR 1910.120. The experienced, creative, and dedicated trainers at MWC centers have successfully trained hundreds of thousands of workers since 1987, increasing the collective training output over time and demonstrating impressive impacts. This programming is delivered by 13 training centers in 9 states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

⚡ Plans for the $1 billion Nemadji Trail Energy Center in Superior, , have officially been canceled after years of legal challenges, permitting delays, and opposition from Indigenous and environmental groups. The proposed plant would have produced up to 625 megawatts of power, but critics raised concerns about , greenhouse gas emissions, wetlands, noise, and its location near a cemetery containing the remains of roughly 200 ancestors of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.

🪸 A new global assessment found that 96% of the world’s shallow-water systems are critically endangered, with identified as the most consistent threat. Rising ocean temperatures can trigger coral bleaching by causing corals to expel the algae they depend on for energy. Overfishing, pollution, coastal development, tourism, and stronger storms are adding further pressure to these , which support fish, sea turtles, sharks, and other marine life.

🌊 A developing in the Pacific is showing unusually intense ocean warming, including a newly expanded warm-water area stretching south from Peru and Ecuador. Peru’s El Niño commission reported localized sea-surface temperatures more than 3°C above historical averages and expects extraordinary to continue into early 2027. Strong El Niño conditions can increase the risk of , , , and other weather impacts, though scientists caution that exact regional outcomes remain uncertain.

⚡ MIT researchers are using to make data centers more efficient as electricity demand from cloud computing continues to grow. Christina Delimitrou and her team are redesigning software and server systems so existing hardware can handle more work with less wasted energy. Their research found that many large computing systems operate far below full capacity, meaning better resource management could reduce the need for additional center construction and the extra that comes with it.

🐧 The world’s largest chinstrap colony has lost nearly two-thirds of its breeding population, with numbers on Zavodovski Island falling from about 1.09 million to 402,000. Researchers say warming ocean conditions are likely pushing Antarctic krill farther south, making it harder for chinstrap penguins to reach their main food source. The decline adds to growing concerns about how is reshaping ecosystems and threatening species that depend on cold-water food webs.
