Professor Carl Warren, a quiet yet resolute presence in the Interprofessional Center (IPC) for Counseling and Legal Services at the University of St. Thomas School of Law, will retire this month. For the past decade, he has taught law students in the law school's Community Justice Project (CJP) legal clinic how to use their skills to advocate for community based public policy solutions for underserved communities and individuals in the juvenile justice, housing, education and criminal justice systems.

Thank you to the more than 500 lawyers and judges who this year volunteered as mentors and gave their time, shared their knowledge and helped our law students learn what it means to be a member of the profession.

Last week, at this year's Mentor Appreciation Reception, the law school honored the 2026 mentors and faculty mentors who provided invaluable learning opportunities and professional connections for our students.⁣

Thank you to Minnesota Lawyers Mutual Insurance Company and Spencer Fane LLP for sponsoring this year's reception.⁣

Everyone is invited to visit https://law.stthomas.edu/jd-program/training/mentor-externship/our-mentors/index.html to view the list of this year's mentors.

Among the many accomplishments of the Class of 2026 is the number of hours of community service they completed as law students.

Each J.D. student is asked to complete at least 50 hours of community service work as part of their legal education at St. Thomas Law. The public service requirement was created on the belief that all lawyers have an obligation to share their skills and knowledge.

This year's class logged more than 11,311 hours of community service! Some even went above the required hours and we want to highlight them below.

800-899 Hours: Jade Egbert

700-799 Hours: Jocie Scherkenbach

200-299 Hours: Jackie Moen, Madison Morehouse, Samantha Sondrol

100-199 Hours: Michael Bernardi, Zachary Brown, Alexandra Dischinger, Morgan Doherty, Elaina Duclos, Sabrina Estes-Possia, Sarah Etheridge, Adam Gallagher, Meg Hellerud, Evan Hromada, Aries Lazaro, Izabella Riter, Jennifer Stegeman, Gabrielle Tremblay, R Watkins

St. Thomas Law has once again been ranked as a top school for practical training by The National Jurist! We have been among the top three law schools in this category since 2014.

The National Jurist's ranking recognizes law schools for the real-world legal experiences they offer students through clinics, externships, mentoring, simulation courses, pro bono hours and moot trial participation.

Pictured are the members of St. Thomas Law's Trial Advocacy Team, 3Ls Grace Castleberg (right) and Allie Dischinger (left), competing this spring in Dallas at the National Trial Competition sponsored by the American College of Trial Lawyers and the Texas Young Lawyers Association.

The competition annually attracts teams from more than 100 law schools and nearly 1,000 law students across the United States. This year was the first time St. Thomas Law reached the national level of this highly competitive competition that strengthens students' advocacy skills through simulated cases before real judges. Way to go students!

The team also included 2L Jacob Ludwig and was coached by Merry Snyder ’23, Kaitlyn Cannon ’20, Alex Wilkie ’23 and Ahmad Samaha, who is also a St. Thomas Law mentor.

St. Thomas law students helped Gibbs Farm: Pathways to Dakota & Pioneer Life earlier this month get ready to open for the season. Volunteers worked alongside farm staff to clear, w**d, rake and trim the grounds for spring and summer visitors.

Gibbs Farm is part of the Ramsey County Historical Society and provides guests with a glimpse into nineteenth century pioneer and Dakota daily life.

On Earth Day, we highlight last week's The Law and the Boundary Waters symposium that was hosted at the law school by Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness and our Environmental Law Society.

The event covered past, current and future legislative and legal issues that have impacted and have the potential to impact the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW).

A series of panels and speakers discussed topics such as the passage and enforcement of the BWCAW Act of 1978, copper-nickel sulfide mining (including the Twin Metals and PolyMet litigation), motorboat and towboat use, Native Nations and the 1854 Treaty Authority, and the impacts of climate change.

During the lunch hour, a multifaith panel composed of leaders from the Jewish, Christian and Islamic faiths engaged in a conversation about the theology of ecology.

Special guest speaker Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison reflected on his BWCAW experiences and talked about his desire to preserve and protect the Boundary Waters.
