Hunter College Department of Political Science

Hunter College Department of Political Science Welcome to the Department of Political Science of Hunter College, City University of New York.

Political science deals with the various political, social, economic, and cultural arrangements through which people govern their lives. It attempts to interpret the past and explain the present, and often dares to draw images of the future. As a field of study, it covers several fields, from the evolution of political philosophy and the implications of contemporary political concepts to the probl

ems of development in emerging nations, from the performance American government at the local, state, and national levels to the interaction of peoples and states in the international arena. In short, the discipline ranges across broad and diverse areas of inquiry. Many people think of politics in terms of what governments do, but political science also covers much else. Students will find courses on the ideas of great thinkers from Plato to the present, the problems of cities, war and peace, democratic and authoritarian political systems, international political economy, human rights, women and politics, political parties and forms of political participation that include interest groups and social movements, constitutional and international law, public policies such as immigration, the domestic and foreign policies of the United States and other countries, and the political systems of various regions around the world including the Middle East, Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

CONGRATULATIONS to Andrew Loka, who has just won a Fulbright Research Grant to Amman, Jordan, for the next academic year!

Andrews is an Egyptian-American alumni from Hunter College, class of 2024. He majored in Political Science and minored in Legal Studies and International Relations. After graduation, he worked as a Resettlement Legal Advisor at St. Andrew’s Refugee Services (StARS) in Cairo, Egypt for around one year.

During his Fulbright, he will be studying religious coexistence in Jordan, examining Jordan’s approach to maintaining sectarian peace and relatively positive relations between its different religious groups. He hopes to provide valuable insights for policymakers and researchers who seek religious peace in MENA as a whole. After the completion of his Fulbright, he plans to continue his education, pursuing a Juris Doctorate degree and a career in law.

CONGRATULATIONS to Nicole Gonik, Hunter’s first-ever Junior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, D.C.! Nicole recently published an article with Carnegie Senior Fellow, Eric Ciaramella, whose work focuses on Ukraine and Russia. Their essay appeared on the organization’s website in June. Nicole begins a Ph.D. program in Slavic Studies at UC Berkeley this fall. Congratulations Nicole!

Two years into Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, a Carnegie-sponsored opinion poll found that Ukrainians still believe strongly in their national cause, even as doubts creep in about the path to victory.
