Fighting dengue, one community at a time!

BSPH alumna Katherine Patino is helping protect Tampa Bay communities through her work with the Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County.

As deputy planning chief for the department’s Incident Management Team, Patino plays an important role in local public health response efforts.

Recently, she joined fellow outreach team members at a Tampa Bay Rowdies game, distributing educational materials and mosquito repellent to help raise awareness about dengue prevention.

Meet Christina Herencia, a COPH student making the most of her opportunities both inside and outside the classroom!

Along with gaining hands-on experience through her internship with USF Tampa General Physicians, Christina serves as a graduate assistant for the COPH's master of health administration program, where she continues to grow personally and professionally.

Her advice to future public health students? Get involved, build meaningful connections and don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone.

COPH students Ashley Varela and Richard Scalzo, along with Judy Genshaft Honors College student Ryan Singh, presented their research at the 2026 American Society for Nutrition Annual Meeting.

Mentored by the COPH’s Dr. Heewon Gray, their work contributes to FRESH-EATS, a community-based nutrition program focused on improving food access and healthy eating habits among children and families.

Alumna Dr. Morgan Brown has built a career using research and data to advance maternal and child health around the world.

After earning her DrPH from COPH in May, Brown began a new chapter as a research analyst with the International Planned Parenthood Federation, where her work focuses on sexual and reproductive health and rights globally.

Along the way, COPH’s Maternal and Child Health Scholars Program helped Brown strengthen her leadership skills, deepen her MCH expertise and continue pursuing her passion for public health.

The COPH’s Dr. Rays Jiang is helping advance the future of cancer research.

Jiang is leading a newly funded project focused on rapidly testing a patient’s own brain tumor cells to help identify which treatments may work best. The project received $2 million from the Florida Department of Health as part of $6 million awarded to three collaborative USF–Tampa General Hospital cancer research projects.

Jiang also serves as a co-investigator on the other two funded projects, extending COPH’s role across all three research teams.

The COPH’s Diplomado en Investigación en Salud offers Spanish-speaking health and public health professionals a flexible, nine-week program designed to build practical research skills they can apply in their work and communities.

Developed through a collaboration between COPH’s Salud Latina faculty and Lifelong Learning Academy, the program combines self-paced learning with live virtual sessions led by USF faculty.

El Diplomado en Investigación en Salud de la Facultad de Salud Pública de USF ofrece a profesionales de habla hispana un programa flexible de nueve semanas diseñado para desarrollar habilidades prácticas de investigación que puedan aplicar en su trabajo y sus comunidades.

Desarrollado en colaboración entre Salud Latina y Lifelong Learning Academy, el programa combina aprendizaje a tu propio ritmo con sesiones virtuales en vivo dirigidas por docentes de USF.

As dengue remains a public health concern in the Tampa Bay area, COPH students are stepping up to support local prevention efforts.

In partnership with the Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County, student volunteers have been going door to door in affected neighborhoods, sharing important information about mosquito bite prevention and helping residents understand how to reduce their risk of dengue.

A special shoutout to Katherine (Kate) Walde, Alexis Dunnick, Dr. Caitlin Wolfe, Angelica Rios and Lorelei Herman for putting public health into action!

With additional outreach opportunities ahead, including potential efforts in Pasco County, our students are helping strengthen community awareness and support efforts to prevent mosquito-borne illnesses.

A new pathway to public health starts right here in Tampa Bay! 🤘

Eckerd College students now have a direct path to continue their education at the COPH through a new graduate school pathway. Students who meet the program requirements can receive automatic admission into our MPH program.

The partnership also brings things full circle for COPH Senior Associate Dean Dr. Jaime Corvin, an Eckerd alumna who helped build the bridge between the two institutions.
