Distinguished University Professor William E. Haley, PhD and Nan Sook Park, PhD, MSW collaborating with USF alumna Yuri Jang, PhD, of USC, on a National Institute on Aging–funded study evaluating K‑Savvy, a culturally tailored caregiver education program.

The project builds on the evidence‑based Savvy Caregiver Program, a widely implemented intervention that helps family caregivers understand dementia, manage challenging behaviors and reduce caregiver stress. The program adapts this proven model specifically for Korean American caregivers by offering instruction in Korean and integrating cultural perspectives on family caregiving, dementia and help‑seeking.

SAS Director Debra Dobbs, PhD presented her research at the Annual Assembly of Hospice and Palliative Care, presented by the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association in San Diego.

Her research, “An Examination of Staff Self-Efficacy Measurement in the Palliative Care Education in Assisted Living Intervention,” addresses a critical gap in end-of-life care for older adults living with dementia in assisted living settings. Advance care planning (ACP) — a necessary first step to honoring care preferences at the end of life — is significantly lacking in this population. A palliative care educational intervention found that only 12% of assisted living residents living with dementia had ACP documentation in their charts at baseline.
