Congratulations to senior Arush Vyas on winning the inaugural UROP Symposium Convergent Research Poster Award in Health Across the Lifespan! The award was given in recognition of outstanding research (and an outstanding research poster). Vyas worked on "Automated Discovery of Vascular Biomarkers in Neurodegenerative Disease Using Foundation Models and Attention-Based Analysis" with ECE faculty mentor Professor Lei Tian.

Congratulations to Christos Cassandras (SE, ECE) on receiving this year’s IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society Outstanding Research Award! His work focuses on autonomous vehicles and the systems that help them drive—work that could one day get rid of traffic lights altogether.

Cassandras spent more than 40 years studying how computers and machines make decisions. Lately, his work has focused on a problem nearly every driver knows well: sitting at a red light with no cross traffic in sight, wondering why it takes so long for the light to turn green.

That idea—proving with mathematical models and intelligent algorithms using cars’ relative speeds, mass, and distance as inputs that self-driving cars will behave safely before they are ever let loose on the streets—has become the foundation of Cassandras’s career and the reason his name keeps coming up in conversations about transportation.

Alongside colleagues from UCLA, the University of Washington, and several other partner organizations, Professor Kayhan Batmanghelich is working on a new NIH-supported effort to develop highly accurate, interpretable vision-language models for improved breast cancer survival predictions. Professors Ayșe Coskun and Emiliano Dall’Anese have been pooling their expertise in energy-efficient computing and the optimization of energy systems in pursuit of managing data center power consumption. Their work is getting a boost from the state of Massachusetts, in the form of a $180K AmplifyMass grant.

On August 25, the New York Times published “This A.I. Start-Up Aims to Reverse the Backlash Against Data Centers: Emerald AI, now valued at $1.05 billion, uses software to keep power demand at the computing facilities from getting out of control.” The piece discusses recent trends in public opinion regarding the AI-driven build-out of data center facilities nationwide, as well as the work of Emerald AI, an ambitious start-up where Professor Ayșe Coskun (ECE, SE) serves as Chief Scientist.
