During the spring semester, five students in Greg Yarrow’s Wildlife and Fisheries Biology Selected Topics course developed a comprehensive wildlife management plan for Clemson alumnus Jim Kaplan's property.

The project challenged the students to think like wildlife professionals and apply classroom knowledge to a challenge that required balancing habitat needs, conservation goals and practical land management.

10 days. 15 students. One unforgettable classroom in the wild. 🐘🌍

What happens when learning moves beyond the classroom and into the heart of South Africa? For Clemson University Animal & Veterinary Sciences students, it meant early mornings tracking animals through the bush, afternoons collecting data and evenings reflecting under some of the clearest night skies in the world.

Each day students tracked and identified wildlife, explored anti-poaching strategies, gained insight from veterinary professionals and examined the balance between protecting wildlife and sustaining ecosystems. The culmination of the trip was a live rhino translocation, an unforgettable experience that brought conservation efforts to life.

A special thank you to Jim Strickland and Gustavo Lascano for their leadership and dedication to creating an experience that challenged, inspired and transformed our students.

“This program challenged me to think more deeply about the role humans play in wildlife conservation and strengthened my passion for wildlife medicine and conservation work in the future.” - Sarahanne
