Yesterday, Scholars at Risk Executive Director Robert Quinn delivered the keynote address at the fifth conference of the Coalition for Academic Freedom in the Americas (CAFA) at the University of Ottawa.

In his remarks, “Toward a Global Academic Freedom Agenda,” Rob called for a coordinated international response to mounting threats to scholars, students, and universities. He emphasized that asking scholars and university leaders to stand up to these threats carries a shared responsibility to offer practical strategies and meaningful protection.

His call to “globalize the defense of academic freedom” centers on solidarity, partnerships, and learning across borders. By drawing on experiences across regions and developing shared priorities, we can protect more scholars and strengthen the freedom to think, question, and share ideas for everyone.

During the conference, Jack Mayerhofer, SAR’s Senior Program Officer for Global Coalitions, presented findings from .

The report documents 382 attacks across 59 countries and territories, examining how violent repression, wrongful imprisonment, and government interference in universities threaten scholars, students, and independent inquiry. It calls on governments, universities, and civil society to work together to protect academic communities and defend the freedom to research, teach, learn, and share ideas.
