Spring Festival Couplets, Chunlian in Chinese, is also known as Spring Couplets or Chinese New Year Couplets. It is the most common and important custom when celebrating Chinese New Year. This tradition is widely kept both in modern cities and rural areas of China.
With black or golden characters written on red paper, Spring Festival Couplets are composed of a pair of poetry lines vertically pasted on both sides of the front door and a four-character horizontal scroll affixed above the doorframe. Pasting couplets expresses people’s delight in the festival and wishes for a better life in the coming year.
Nowadays, English language learners try to write Chunlian in English following the antithetical pattern, which adds a touch of freshness to the traditional custom in China.

While Western kids dream about what Santa will bring them, as Chinese New Year approaches, Chinese kids will be getting their piggy banks ready to receive hong bao.
Hong Bao (红包) packets, literally "red envelope," are the traditional gifts that adults give children during the Chinese New Year holiday period. The general idea is that adults with income give children with no income Hong Bao during Chinese New Year. In practice, "children" can even mean unmarried young adults.
Children ask for Hong Bao by saying, "Gong Xi Fa Cai, Hong Bao Na Lai!" It means Happy New Year! Give me a red envelope! Don't be shocked though, everyone is prepared for this and the givers make arrangements in advance so that when they go visiting, they have the red packets at hand for such occasions.

This is a traditional dish of Sichuan cuisine with a good story. It’s named after its inventor Mapo which means pockmarked elderly woman in Chinese. Mapo ran a small restaurant in Chengdu, Sichuan, in the late 1800s. This dish was so incredibly delicious that it became famous over the place and her guests gave the name: Mapo Tofu. It’s basically braised tofu with minced pork or beef in a red, spicy, and oily sauce made from fermented broad bean and chili paste, and fermented black beans, along with hot red pepper and Sichuan pepper. It has a mix of aromatic, spicy, and numbing flavors with a soft and flaky texture that will electrify every taste bud in your mouth.
