What if the future of medicine starts in the gut? 🦠

Before Andrea McBeth, ND became a leader in microbiome innovation, she was pursuing a PhD in biomedical engineering and molecular biology.

Now, her work is helping reshape how we think about gut health, chronic disease, and the connection between science and healing.

From research to entrepreneurship, her journey reflects how National University of Natural Medicine students are pushing healthcare forward in unexpected ways.

Award-winning research. Big questions. A new frontier in mental health.

NUNM’s fifth-year Naturopathic Medical student 𝐏𝐚𝐲𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐝 recently earned national recognition at the International Congress of Integrative Medicine and Health (ICIMH) for her award-winning research poster exploring the relationship between the gut microbiome, psychedelics, and mental health.

Her research looks at how the gut may play a bigger role in emotional and mental well-being than we once thought and how certain psychedelic plant medicines may impact the body beyond just short-term effects.

“𝘐𝘵 𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘶𝘱 𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨.”

From personal curiosity to recognition, Payton’s work is helping spark important conversations about the future of mental health care.

We’re incredibly proud to celebrate Payton and excited to see where her research journey leads next. 💚

A life rooted in care. A legacy carried forward.

Today, we honor the life and legacy of 𝐉𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐏𝐞𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲, 𝐍𝐃—a physician, mentor, and quiet force in community-based naturopathic care.

Dr. Peabody believed in meeting people where they are. In listening deeply. In supporting the body’s ability to heal with humility, compassion, and respect.

Her journey into medicine began with her own healing, and grew into a lifetime of service, caring for families across generations, guiding students in the clinic, and strengthening the connection between medicine and community.

At NUNM, she helped shape future physicians not only through clinical training, but through example—reminding us that medicine is as much about presence and integrity as it is about knowledge.

Her legacy lives on in the patients she served, the students she mentored, and the values she carried forward every day.

We are deeply grateful for her life, her work, and her enduring impact.

This is what advocacy looks like. 💪

NUNM leadership was in Washington, D.C. for the 𝗗𝗖 𝗙𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 (DC FLI) — the naturopathic profession’s annual lobbying day.

Alongside colleagues from across the country, they met directly with senate and congressional offices to advocate for naturopathic medicine and the patients we serve.

This is how change happens.
This is how our profession moves forward.

We’re proud to stand with the many naturopathic physicians showing up, speaking out, and advancing the future of integrative healthcare at the federal level.

Grateful to be part of a community that leads with purpose. 💚

Health doesn’t stop at borders. 🌍

April 7 marks World Health Day — a global reminder that improving health requires global perspective, collaboration, and action.

At NUNM, our Master of Science in Global Health (MScGH) program prepares students to take that work into the real world.

Through a blend of public health and traditional world medicine, students:
✈️ Gain hands-on experience through international fieldwork
🌿 Work alongside local practitioners and communities
🧠 Learn to address health disparities and complex global systems
🤝 Develop culturally informed, sustainable solutions

This isn’t just learning — it’s real-world impact across communities worldwide.

Because advancing health equity starts with understanding the world around us.

🌱 Interested in global health?
