Internship Spotlight: 👋 Meet Alejandra Lorenzen - a PhD Student in Integrated Biomedical Sciences in the Cell Biology, Genetics, & Molecular Medicine Discipline and Merck Intern!

This summer, Alejandra completed an internship at Merck headquarters in Rahway, New Jersey, serving as a Clinical & Regulatory Strategic Communications Intern within Global Clinical Trial Operations.

During the internship, she worked alongside medical writers to communicate changes to ongoing clinical trials and disclose clinical trial results to the NIH and European Union.

One of her biggest accomplishments was identifying gaps in internal reporting mechanisms for clinical trial changes, which will help improve federal compliance. She also strengthened their cross-functional communication skills by translating technical information into language that is accessible to broader audiences.

Beyond the work itself, the internship provided opportunities to build meaningful professional relationships and experience Merck’s collaborative culture and emphasis on work-life balance. Hear more about her experience at the GSBS internship panel on Friday, September 25!

In addition to her internship, Alejandra has passed her QE and will be receiving her white coat the Candidacy Ceremony next week! 🥼 🎉

Meet Laurence Maeyens 👋

Laurence is a bioengineer from Belgium who became a promising anti-aging scientist and Texan cowboy when he moved to San Antonio two years ago to pursue his doctoral degree.

Hometown: Antwerp, Belgium

Program: Integrated Biomedical Sciences – Biology of Aging Discipline

Research Topic: Laurence is exploring why men tend to age faster and live shorter lives than women. Laurence's research suggests that male s*x hormones limit lifespan by negatively affecting the adipose tissue.

Favorite Conference: American Aging Association Meeting in Anchorage, Alaska in 2025. During the conference, Laurence met renowned researchers in the field of aging and received an award for his oral presentation. After the conference, Laurence, his girlfriend, and his mentor took a road trip through the Alaskan wilderness

Favorite Things to do Outside of Lab: Laurence volunteers at a local horse ranch, where he has learned to ride horses, rope, and help with various ranch activities. In his free time, he takes fossil-hunting trips with the Paleontological Society of Austin

Fun Facts: Laurence speaks five languages - Dutch, French, German, English, and Spanish. Laurence also has a YouTube channel where he shares his passion for science. Follow him @ Talpham

Tomorrow at GSBS Convocation, we will be celebrating fifth year DDS/PhD Student Sara Gaiser as the recipient of the 2026 Robles Leadership Award, which honors students who demonstrate outstanding leadership and a genuine care and concern for their community.

An IBMS student in the Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics discipline, Sara exemplifies leadership through service. As founder and president of Lab RATS, Sara has created opportunities for graduate students to give back through service projects, community outreach and science education. Under her leadership, LAB RATS earned the Community Service Student Organization Award and secured $20,000 from Eli Lilly to develop an elementary science curriculum and expand its impact.

She has trained and mentored new graduate students in the lab, mentored high school students in the Voelcker Biomedical Research program and college students in the STUROP Program, and is a peer mentor in the GSBS Transition Peer Mentor Program.

She remains actively involved in the dental community through various student organizations.

This summer, Sara returned to dental school to continue her training as a dental-scientist.

🏆 The Heather Menzie Junior Graduate Student Award honors one graduate student who combines academic excellence with a commitment to servant leadership and fourth-year MD/PhD student Xena Huang exemplifies both.

Xena, a student in the IBMS Program Cancer Biology Discipline, is investigating how the transcription factor FOXM1 regulates immune memory development in triple-negative breast cancer. Xena has contributed to multiple high-impact publications, and her graduate work is expected to generate four first-author publications.

Xena embodies the spirit of servant leadership. She serves as founder and president of the Cell Systems & Anatomy Student Association, represents the MD/PhD Program on the Medical Student Council, mentors aspiring physician-scientists, and helps organize community health clinics for underserved populations.

Inspired by her late father, Xena hopes to become a physician-scientist and develop innovative cancer therapies.

From advancing promising new therapies for triple-negative breast cancer to making a lasting impact through mentorship, leadership, and service, Khaled Nassar has distinguished himself as an exceptional member of the GSBS community and has been selected to receive the Senior Student of the Year Award!

A fifth-year Integrated Biomedical Sciences – Cancer Biology student, Khaled has earned national recognition for his research, including the Minority Scholar in Cancer Research Award at the AACR Annual Meeting and the Basic Science Scholars Award at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. He has also received multiple presentation awards and authored two first-author peer-reviewed publications.

Beyond the lab, Khaled mentors undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, MD, and high school trainees in experimental design, data analysis, and laboratory techniques. This year, he was also selected for the highly competitive U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps Junior COSTEP Program at the NIH.

At the GSBS, our students gain access to transformative experiences, industry mentorship, and opportunities that prepare them for successful careers in science, research, and academia.

For fourth-year IBMS Biology of Aging student Mbolle Ekane, graduate school has opened the door to incredible opportunities including being selected as a 2026 SMDP Scholar!

The Scientist Mentoring & Diversity Program (SMDP) is a prestigious year-long career mentoring program that connects students and early-career researchers with industry mentors from leading medical technology, biotechnology, and consumer healthcare companies. Over the next year, Mbolle will be mentored by an industry professional from Pfizer.

As part of the program, Mbolle attended the BIO International Convention in San Diego and participated in career development coaching, networked with professionals from top pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, and built valuable connections with leaders across the life sciences industry.

Congratulations to our Summer Travel Award Winners: Maria Jose Londono and Emily Aller! 🎉

✈️ Maria Jose Londono will be attending the 62nd Annual Meeting of the Society of Cryobiology in Seattle, Washington (CRYO26). Maria is a third-year PhD student in Biomedical Engineering under the mentorship of Robert De Lorenzo, PhD. Maria is looking forward to increasing the visibility of her research in cryobiology, organ preservation, and biomedical heat transfer. Her work focuses on understanding thermal transport in perfused tissues. CRYO 2026 is also a strategic venue for expanding the Thermoregulatory Health Emergencies and Rapid Management Interdisciplinary Collaboration (THERMIC), a multi-institutional effort that Maria helped create and currently leads.

✈️ Emily Aller is an MD/PhD student in the Integrated Biomedical Sciences Program – Cancer Biology Discipline under the mentorship of Dr. Ratna Vadlamudi. Emily is investigating the development of novel targeted therapies for aggressive endometrial cancers, with a particular focus on Midkine. She will use the award funds to attend the FASEB Conference on Cell Signaling in Cancer Conference in Louisville, Kentucky, where she will present her research on novel targeted therapies for aggressive endometrial cancers.
