The Department of Public Health would like to recognize Katherine Joan Buchman, PhD, for participating in our Spring 2026 Hooding Ceremony!

Favorite Memory
"I have two favorite memories. At the conclusion of my first time teaching an undergraduate public health course, I received a very genuine and unexpected thank you note and gift of a beautiful plant from a student who expressed her appreciation for my passion for public health. I was very touched and treasure both that note and the plant. (It's still alive!) I will also never forget hosting Q***r Passover for three years with my substitute family here in Lafayette. L'chaim!"

After Graduation
"In July, I will begin a postdoctoral fellowship in the LGBTQ+ Policy Lab at Vanderbilt University. I will continue to pursue a research agenda focused on promoting LGBTQ+ health equity through health departments, as well as illuminating and eliminating LGBTQ+ and related health disparities. I look forward to returning home to Nashville, reconnecting with old friends, and spending time with family in between research and advocacy work."

Our alumni spotlight features Kayla Gatt, MPH. Kayla graduated from the Department of Public Health in 2020 from our MPH Online Program. She is currently the Propel Project Coordinator for State of Michigan Newborn Screening Program.

According to Kayla, the PUBH program prepared her for her future job or endeavor by, "My job is 90% remote, so I am expected to create a work plan that allows me to reach my quarterly objectives. Completing an online program introduced me to the importance of time management and working on individual projects." When asked what advice she would give to current students to help them achieve their goals and future aspirations in the field of Public Health, her response, "Public health is an important career that requires empathy, dedication and knowledge about disparities to provide the best possible programs to your communities. Public health is a broad career and there are so many different opportunities available, be sure to find what fits you best!"

🎉Congratulations to Pianpian Cao on being named an honoree of the Ralph W. and Grace M. Showalter Research Trust to support her groundbreaking project, “Building a National ZIP Code-Level Environmental Exposure Database for Lung Cancer Risk Modeling.”

This innovative research will develop the first harmonized, longitudinal ZIP code-level database of environmental lung carcinogens across the United States and integrate these exposures into lung cancer risk prediction models. By incorporating factors such as radon, air pollution and industrial exposures alongside traditional smoking-based criteria, the project aims to improve the identification of individuals at elevated risk for lung cancer.
