Our vibrant new music program, combined with an internationally renowned faculty and excellent facilities makes the BGSU composition program one of the most visible and thriving in the country. Our four talented and diverse full-time composition faculty members, Christopher Dietz, Mikel Kuehn, Elainie Lillios, and Marilyn Shrude, work well together to foster a supportive, creative environment in w

hich young composers can thrive. Our history of excellence spans more than three decades. Students in the BGSU Composition program are given the opportunity to interact with guest composers and ensembles through a variety of residencies, reading sessions, and the annual New Music Festival hosted by the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music. BGSU also provides composition students with the opportunity to have their music performed through composer forum concerts, as well as concerts hosted by our SCI student chapter, Praecepta. There is no shortage of performance opportunities for composers at BGSU!

Yesterday, we concluded the annual Toledo Symphony Orchestra Reading Session at BGSU. We congratulate this year’s participating composers — Lukas Bass, Will Hermanowski, Ömer Kurtuluş, Gabriel Manisco, and Szu An-Chen — for their outstanding work and artistic dedication.

Matthew Shephard Receives Multiple Honors

The College of Musical Arts congratulates Matthew Shephard, adjunct instructor in our online MM in Teaching Artistry program and Director of Bands at Meridian (MI) High School, on receiving two distinguished honors.

Mr. Shephard was named one of 15 national recipients of the 2025 Country Music Association Music Teacher of Excellence Award. He has also been recognized, for the fifth consecutive year, as a semifinalist for the GRAMMY Music Educator of the Year Award.

We are proud to celebrate Mr. Shephard’s continued commitment to excellence in music education and his outstanding contributions to the field.
